The Beagle breed – Friendly Loyal And Loving

A small to medium-sized dog, the beagle weighs between 20-28 lbs and is 12″ to 16″ in height. Sometimes referred to as the English Beagle breed, this breed is energetic, friendly and loyal both as a family companion and hunting dog.

Coat colours accepted by the AKC are orange and white, lemon and white, red and white or tri-coloured. Black, white and tan tri-coloured coats are the most common. Their medium-length coat is smooth, hard and close. It requires minimal brushing and only needs washing occasionally.

Friendly, loyal, loving and playful are all qualities that make them excellent family pets. Homes with other dogs, pets and children can all welcome the Beagle as part of the family. They require minimal socialization and actually enjoy the companionship of other pets and their family. A very energetic breed, the beagle needs a home that will give them plenty of play time, exercise and regular walks. When outside they should be in a fenced in yard and a leash should be used for walks as they have a tendency to explore and follow scents. They make good watchdogs as they will let you know if someone is at the door by barking, but they are naturally friendly with strangers, so don’t expect them to be good guard dogs.

Originating in England, this scent hound was bred for hunting rabbits and quails. They would often hunt in packs or pairs, but can also hunt well alone as well. They have an excellent sense of smell which makes them good at tracking and as narcotics dogs. Today they are mainly seen as companion dogs in the United States, but they are also used as hunting dogs.

A breed with such a friendly, loving nature is perfect for just about any family dynamic. Because of their high energy level and need for regular exercise, they work best with active families or those that have a yard where they can have plenty of time to roam and run. If you are looking for an affectionate breed that enjoys family companionship and loves to play, then the Beagle is the perfect dog for you.

Ways a Service Dog Can Assist in a Medical Crisis

Ways a Service Dog Can Assist in a Medical Crisis

While for some, a dog is part of the family and a way to give and receive unconditional love, for others a dog is so much more. This is the case with a service dog. There are so many ways a service dog can assist in a medical crisis.

Not only can a service dog assist during a medical crisis, but it can be of optimal use before an actual crisis sets in as well.

Medical dogs have an uncanny ability or an extra sense when it comes to their owners. Some dogs have an innate ability to sense when something is amiss. This close sense of perception between dog and owner seems to come naturally in some cases.

Service Dog

Dogs who have this innate ability to alert their masters may be excellent candidates for training to alert. An alert simply means that a dog will alert its owner by various methods of an impending medical crisis:

* Barking
* Pawing
* Jumping on its owners
* Giving them a nudge

There are several ways an owner can take action now because their medical assist dog has alerted them:

* Taking their medication
* Taking their blood pressure
* Checking their blood sugar
* Getting to a safe place
* Calling a neighbor
* Reaching out for help in a public domain

These dogs are trained to alert their owners, which are vital, but also to assist them once an emergency has occurred. Here’s how:

* Seek out help for their owners
* Ensure the position of their owners is safe during something like a seizure
* And even pressing a button to contact emergency medical personnel

Just as there are many ways a medical dog can alert and assist an owner before, during, and after a crisis, medical alert and medical assist dog can also help with many conditions:

* Diabetes
* High blood pressure
* Heart conditions
* Fainting
* Seizures

Of course, a medical crisis dog or a medical assist dog needs caring for and, as such, an owner with disabilities still needs to be sure that he or she can care for that dog. The dog will still need walking, grooming, and veterinarian visits.

A medical crisis or a medical assist dog is a wonderful gift to its owner and the families that love them.

The Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy and Pet Facilitated Therapy

The Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy and Pet Facilitated Therapy

Animals used for therapy is certainly not a new idea. For years, it was thought that animals offered therapeutic, emotional, psychological, and physical benefits to a patient. Today, we know that these animals are useful in all these ways and many more.

Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal assisted therapy is a program wherein the presence of an animal is part of the whole process of treatment. An individual trained in health care will often oversee the whole process.

Emotional Benefits

Studies have shown that owning a pet simply makes us feel good. Having a reciprocal relationship of unconditional love with our pet feels even better. Studies conducted have shown that interaction with a pet has a definite positive impact on an individual’s emotional state of mind.

Studies have also demonstrated that stress, anxiety, panic, fear, and loneliness are all alleviated or lessened in individuals who own pets. Individuals who engage with a pet show better moods, a more positive outlook, and an inspired attitude as compared with those who do not own pets. An increase in self-esteem is also shown as one of the studied benefits of interaction with a pet.

It has also been shown that cognitive development, social skills, and a reduction in aggression are some of the many more benefits achieved through animal interaction. Overcoming shyness is another benefit of having a pet in the life of an individual. Research shows that shy individuals tend to become more outgoing when a pet is involved.

Physical Benefits

The physical benefits of animal assisted therapy and pet-facilitated therapy are numerous. For one thing, research and studies show that animal-assisted therapy or pet-facilitated therapy help patients to lower their blood pressure. Lower pressure, of course, can equate to a healthier heart. Another benefit is having lower cholesterol. Heart rate and cholesterol are positively impacted because the presence of a pet reduces stress and anxiety in a patient.

Some patients benefit from a doctor’s visit simply by having a pet in the room to alleviate stress. A small amount of time spent with a friendly dog is enough to lower the fight or flight chemical, including cortisol. When an individual is relaxed, stress hormones do not kick in and this can help a patient get well.

Therapists have used animal assisted therapy and pet-facilitated therapy to bring an uncooperative, withdrawn patient out in the open and create a space of trust and confidence.

These therapies are useful in areas where physically, emotionally, physiologically, and socially challenged individuals are concerned.

Animal assisted therapy and pet-facilitated therapy are used in hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, adult homes, and in many other facilities with much success.
